Представители среднего класса [middle class] поколения "бума рождаемости" [baby boom] (время рождения 1950-е; ежегодный доход около 40 тыс. долларов), часто выходцы из рабочего класса [blue-collar worker], получившие образование. Составляют костяк работников сферы обслуживания и руководящих работников среднего звена. К ним относят также многочисленную группу лиц с высшим образованием, занимающих рабочие места в электронной промышленности. Прежде игнорировавшаяся, эта категория американцев сейчас находится под пристальным вниманием сферы торговли (благодаря своей огромной покупательной способности) и политических партий (так как они составляют около 15 процентов избирателей). Выражение появилось в середине 1980-х как комбинация слов [having a COLLAR of NEW kind], автором его считают чикагского журналиста К. Уйатхеда [Whitehead, Ralph].
